This cake was on my mind for quite some time. Then one day I got a request from kiddo to make a marble cake which eventually led to this delicious ombre cake.
The ombre effect is darkened due to the use of organic cane sugar. So I suggest healthy sugar like organic brown sugar will lead to a better effect than the one in the pic. Amrit brand brown sugar is good choice. Or else is normal refined white sugar is fine.
Also another reason for the dark colour is the use of wheat flour. Even a vanilla cake will be light brown in colour with use of wheat flour.
Ingredients:
150 gms wheat flour
150 gms butter
150 gms light brown organic sugar
3 eggs
1.5 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla essence
3 tbsp cocoa powder
2-3 tbsp milk
Method:
Line a loaf tin with butter paper. If that is not available grease it with oil or butter and dust with flour.
Melt the butter and cream it with a spatula.
Add the sugar and mix till the sugar is well combined.
Add the vanilla and eggs and beat well.
The beating and mixing can be done by hand or hand blender.
Sift the flour and baking powder and fold into the butter mixture.
Now for the ombre effect, divide the batter into 3 equal parts.
Keep one part aside.
In the 2nd part, add 1 tbsp cocoa powder and blend well.
In the last one, add 2 tbsp cocoa and one tbsp milk and mix well.
Preheat oven to 180 c
Now for the ombre effect, pour the vanilla layer into the tin. Tap the tin to make it level.
Next pour the 2nd part (1 tbsp cocoa powder part) over the vanilla layer carefully. Tap gently to spread it evenly.
Lastly pour the 3rd part and tap the tin gently to spread the last layer.
Bake for 27 to 30 minutes.
Poke a toothpick into the centre. If it comes out clean the cake is baked well.
Slice it up and enjoy a warm slice with a cup of coffee.
